The Original Campus Site of Soochow University lies in the southern part of the main campus of Today’s Suzhou University, taking up an area of 60,000 square meters and having building area of 21,000 square meters. The preserved architectures on the site include the Clock Tower, or Lin Building(in memorial of Lin Lezhi, one of the founders of the university) , which was commenced in the autumn of the twenty-seventh year of Reign of Emperor Guangxu (1901) in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)and completed in the spring of the twenty-ninth year of the same emperor; the Library, or Sun Building(in memorial of David L. Anderson, the first president of the university, whose Chinese name is Sun Lewen), which was completed in the third year of the Reign of Emperor Xuantong (1911) in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911); the Science Hall, or Ge Building (in memorial of J. W. Cline’s father, J. W. Cline is the second president of the university), which was completed in the thirteenth year of the Republic of China(1911-1949); the Student Dormitory, or Weige Building(in memorial of Li Weige, one of the patriotic reformers in the late period of the Qing Dynasty, who donated his houses in Shanghai to build the dormitory) , which was completed in the twenty-third year of the Republic of China(1911-1949); the Zishi Building(another dormitory building in memorial of Cao Zishi (1847-1902), a famous educator and preacher living in the late period of Qing Dynasty ), which was completed in the twenty-fourth year of the Republic of China(1911-1949); and the Sports Stadium Building completed in the twenty-fifth year during the same period. These architectures were constructed to different styles, either classical European, or medieval castle. Nevertheless, they maintained good unity in diversity and remained well preserved till today. In addition, on the northern part of the site there is a row of six small buildings parallel to the school gate. They are in beautiful shapes, with some built to the residential style of the western United States. These buildings, used to be the dormitory for the teaching staff, were completed in a span of time from the thirty-third year of the Reign of Emperor Guangxu (1907) in the Qing Dynasty to the eighth year of the Republic of China (1919). On the western part of the site is a five-story building for accommodating female students, which was completed in the twenty-fifth year of the Republic of China. The Original Campus Site of Soochow University kept a good record of a church university and the modern western buildings cluster.
