
Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu festival in Chinese) is popular in the former territory of the State of Wu, now Suzhou and Taihu Lake Area in Jiangsu and Zhenjiang Provinces. Suzhou Dragon Boat Festival is related to Wu Zixu , a famous general in the State of Wu in the Spring and Autumn Period in Chinese history, and its origin can even be traced back to the dragon worship ritual in the primitive times. The major folk custom of this festival is a dragon boat competition. Today, this competition is still popular in XuJiang River, Midu Bridge Area in Fengmen, and Shang Lake area in Changshu City. In Suzhou, the festive customs include eating Zongzi (pyramid-shaped snacks made of glutinous rice wrapped in reed leaves) , expelling poison from the body, etc. Suzhou Dragon-boat Festival is marked with some primitive influence, and has its unique local characteristics. It has rich cultural meanings and strong business sense.
