Suzhou entered the plum rain season on June 11, seven days earlier than an average year, the city’s weather agency said.
Short-term showers are expected in Suzhou on June 12. There will be scattered thunderstorms on June 13, accompanied by strong convective weather such as short-term heavy rainfall of up to 20-30 millimeters and gale-force winds reaching levels 7 to 9. And the city will see relatively heavy rainfall on June 15.
In Suzhou, the plum rain season usually starts on June 18 and ends on July 9, which lasts for 21 days, with an average rainfall of 247.9 millimeters. Last year, the city entered the plum rain season on June 19 and the rainy period lasted for 26 days, with frequent heavy precipitation and strong convective weather. The average rainfall was 432.9 millimeters, 75% more than the average of previous years, ranking eighth in history.
The plum rain season is a muggy rainy season which happens to be the time for plums to ripen, which explains the origin of its name.
