Suzhou entered meteorological summer on May 12, which is 15 days earlier than the usual date of May 27 in a typical year. This year, spring began on Mar. 19 and lasted for 63 days.
According to the meteorological criteria, when five consecutive days with average daily temperatures equal to or exceeding 22°C appear within a nine-day temperature sequence, the first day with a daily average temperature equal to or higher than 22°C in the temperature sequence is considered the start of meteorological summer.
The city’s average daily temperature exceeded 22°C on May 13 which is followed by several consecutive days with average daily temperatures higher than 22°C. Therefore, meteorological summer this year began on May 12, as it was the first day met the above-mentioned criteria.
This week, the city has been experiencing higher temperatures, with the daily maximum temperature exceeding 30°C on May 14.
